The Cubit
A cubit is like a span. It uses a part of your body, and it allows people to measure things. But a cubit is the length from the distance from the tip of your middle finger to your elbow. The cubit was the standard measuring unit for some ancient civilizations like Egypt.
A Span
What you see right now is an ordinary hand. This hand though actually is like a "ruler" for some ancient civilizations. The distance from your thumb to your pinky is called a span. Many people in ancient times would use this along with a cubit to measure things. But the problem with this system was that people have different size hands and arms, so there were different measurements for each person.
